Therapeutic laser is a treatment focusing a intense beam of energy to penetrate deeply into diseased or inflamed tissues to promote healing or relieve pain. It is a safe, non-invasive and side-effect free out patient procedure which Dr Lugten has used on countless patients over the last 5 years.
Recently, we saw Flash, a 12 year old female cat who had fallen from a fence outside and ruptured her Achilles tendon, which was still swollen and painful to manipulation. She could not stand properly on the leg- the “ankle” or hock joint would sag towards the ground so that she would practically be walking on on it.
She had already been to the specialty center and the recommended treatment involved surgery. Under general anesthesia, the hind leg would have to be cut open, the torn ends of tendon sutured, and then the hock joint would need to be stabilized by a large screw driven into the tibial bone, or a cast applied for 6 weeks.
Instead, we treated Flash with our Therapeutic laser unit with a simple 8 minute outpatient procedure every 3-4 days for the first 3 treatments, then weekly.
I was confident that we could alleviate the painful swelling, but unsure that the treatment could heal the torn ends of the tendon back together as effectively as the surgery. If not, then Flash would always have a limp wit her ‘heal’ dropping as she walked. By the 2nd treatment, she was already more comfortable, and by the 4th treatment, she was playing and running, acting almost normal. By the 5th treatment, the hock joint stopped dropping when she walked, and after 6 treatments, she was completely normal.
Once again, a very gratifying result using Therapeutic laser. If your pet has any issues involving acute or chronic pain, speak to Dr Lugten about drug and surgery free healing.
